While the members of the Adler Publishing team come from varying backgrounds, they have united thanks to their common passions for the outdoors, four-wheeling and books. We have assembled this experienced team to bring you the Backcountry Adventures guidebook series.
It all started when Peter Massey and Jeanne Wilson moved west to Colorado in 1993. They bought a Jeep and started exploring the backroads, the best place to find the spectacular sites and scenery the state has to offer. The pair saw many amazing sites, such as entire deserted towns and extensive old mine workings in unbelievably remote and difficult terrain. They thought it was astonishing that no one seemed to know much about them. They also discovered how frustratingly easy it was to get lost out there.
Peter and Jeanne realized these sites were historical treasures that should be accessible for anyone to see. So they decided to publish a guidebook that would chronicle their travels through the state. They thought book should keep people on the right track by identifying trails and supplying dependable directions with GPS coordinates (a new technology at the time). They also included interesting and useful historic and reference sections to tell the stories of the amazing ghost towns, mines, and other sites along the trails.
It was only natural for Peter and Jeanne to take on the project. Peter grew up in the Australian outback, chasing 'roos, riding horses and driving the remote dirt roads. And Jeanne, a lover of animals and the outdoors, traveled the U.S. extensively seeing the sites, starting at young age. Peter and Jeanne had also recently returned to the U.S. after traveling extensively in Australia. Among numerous other trips, they spent 6 months 4-wheeling their way through the Outback. Jeanne even wrote a book on her Australian outback adventures.
After traveling 15,000 miles and researching more than 100 trails, they published 4WD Adventures Colorado. The process took nearly 2 years. Their first book was so successful, they published more guidebooks and began expanding the company by recruiting team members with publishing expertise, such as Angela Titus.
Peter and Jeanne knew Angela would be a useful addition to the team. She grew up 4-wheeling the Colorado backroads with her family, and she spent all her spare time outdoors, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, or whitewater canoeing. She also has a publishing background with an emphasis on photography.
Most recently the team gained the off-road automotive and magazine publishing expertise of George Adler. George started his career in the auto parts industry from which he built a national business that designs and manufactures parts, tires and accessories for off-roaders. He also pioneered the off road industry's first magazine.
