British racing pioneer Sir Malcolm Campbell put Bonneville Salt Flats on the map in 1935 by setting a land speed record of 301.13 miles per hour. The area is a remnant of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, which left a massive deposit of rock-hard salt. In winter, the track remains submerged under water.
